Monthly Give-A-Way Winner Cory Johnson limits out on Redfish with Captain Jimmie Dooms

Making the best of "not the greatest fishing" conditions can be a chore, to say the very least.  Since I got my new 2011 Majek Extreme, I've not had many opportunities to get on the water considering all of the rain and fowl weather we've had.  Once I could get out there, we had a front blow in really messed up the fishing with the barometric pressures we are seeing.  I spent 3 days in a row on the water trying to find some fish for Cory Johnson, one of my Monthly Give-A-Way winners.  Cory has had his trip moved more than a U-Haul truck.  It started out with me not having a boat to run as I was in between boats, then once I got the boat it was the weather keeping us on land.  Finally, we had the right weather to get away from the dock, but the fishing was no good.  So, we elected to wait a week and let the fishing get good again.  Well, that was proving to be another problem, but Cory and I agreed, it's been too long, let's just go give it our best shot.

Like I said, I spent 3 whole days looking for some productive areas.  When I say, "whole" days, I mean it.  I was getting out there at first light and not coming back in until 3:00 - 5:00 each day.  I looked hard and looked every where.  The first two days I had goose eggs to show!  Absolutely no fish to speak of.  The day before I improved to a whopping one Redfish in the slot and one undersized Trout.  After spending three days in the Upper Laguna Madre, I decided on our trip to head way south and get to some deeper water where the fish could get under the fresh water level and have some salinity to breath from.  I chose the Land Cut.

I have to admit, I was quite lucky to have Cory and his good buddy Chase on the boat that day.  Both are very good anglers and are die hard artificial fisherman, which made my life that much easier.  We stopped at about mile marker 6 in the Land Cut, where we put the Power Pole down with the bow of the boat beached.  Cory and Chase went north and I went south.  We were throwing Bass Assassin's, Top Waters, and Bass Assassin 4" Swim Shads.  We were concentrating on balled up bait on the grassy edge of the Land Cut.  As I made my way about 20 yards from the boat I noticed Redfish pushing bait on the bank.  I turned and made a sight cast to the first one I saw, but he just ran from the Bass Assassin.  This would prove to be the case for about an hour.  Chase was able to catch one on a white and red headed Mirrolure Top Pup.  We were able to catch a few trout, but nothing like we were looking for.  All of the Trout were undersized.

With what I was seeing, we moved about 2 miles further south to an area of the Land Cut that has more sand and grass beds near the shoreline.  I knew this area would be holding more Redfish as it gives them such a better opportunity to chase the mullet, shrimp, and crabs.  As soon as we got there, we started seeing fish moving up and down the drop off.  I gave both Chase and Cory some Bass Assassin 4" Swim Shads in the Blurp scent.  I told them this would be the ticket and would make it easy to throw to the drop off looking for Trout as well.  It was for sure the correct move.  We began catching Redfish one after the other.  All fish were caught by sight casting.  We were not even making many blind casts at all.  Why, when all you had to do was just walk around quietly until you found one cruising around?

It made for a great and action filled day for sure.  Considering how tough the fishing had been, the move to the Land Cut was absolutely the correct move.  Considering we were fishing with artificial and not bait, we really had to adjust to a place where we could find some action.  Cory and Chase were both very supportive to do what ever it took to find some fish.  I will say these two worked their butts off with me.  We didn't stop to eat lunch at all.  We all took a drink of water and a snack while we were hopping each other in the Land Cut.  We fished until almost 2:00 PM and caught and released fish all day long.  Thanks to Cory Johnson for being a member and a part of our team.  It was a blast and a pleasure to spend the day on the water with him and Chase.  Not only did I get to enjoy my day with them, but I made a new friend as well.  We will also be announcing the next monthly winner this week, so be on the look out!  Until next time.... Good fishing to you all.  Remember if you have questions, suggestions, or need a fishing report for your next trip, don't hesitate to contact me at anytime.
