A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure to fish with some really cool cats and some great fisherman. We started our day off in the Upper Laguna Madre targeting a school of Redfish that I had found the day before. The wind had picked up from a 5 mph wind the day before, to a 20-25 mph wind on this day. Making it nearly impossible to locate the school of Reds. With a little persistance and patience, I was able to finally spot these fish. Once we got on them, it was very crazy to say the least. Fish getting tangled up in each others lines, fish being broke off, fish coming off, fish over the size limit, etc... We ended up catching around 25 Reds in order to get our limit. We actually had to get back on them twice as there was a little miscommunication on how many were actually in the box and some fish being tossed back. That was pretty funny and I personally think they did it on purpose so we'd have to catch them again!
Around 9:00 AM we left the Reds and went to a place just south of Pure Oil channel where I had recently been looking for Reds and was catching some nice fat Trout on copper spoons at will. Once we got there, we put the power pole down and got out to do a wade for these Trout. Just like fish do, they swim, and apparently they all decided to swim to another location. With our hats in our hands, we went back to the boat without a bite. As I was trying to figure out another spot to find some Trout, I noticed that the tide was started to fall out. An immediate light bulb went off in my head. High winds, falling tide, and a low pressure. I knew just where to go.....
I headed towards the mouth of Baffin to fish an area called the Meadows. I like to look for Trout on grass beds when there is a falling tide and high winds. I know there are other places to catch Trout in these conditions, but for me, I seem to do the best on grass beds. As we pulled up to the spot, I was telling them what the game plan would be. I told them that we would be targeting these deeper grass beds and some of the adjacent pot holes inside the grass lines for some good sized Trout. I had the guys follow me up and down these beds, targeting the beds with bait activity.
My plan worked to perfection. Almost immediately we started catching some small, undersized, Trout. I told them that there had to be bigger Trout here and to just stay with it. Not 10 seconds after I said that, I hooked into a beautiful 28-1/2" Trout. I can tell you that the intensity level of everyone went to an entirely new level almost immediately. It wasn't but just a few minutes later when another beautiful Trout at 27-1/2" was caught. For nearly 4 hours we caught Trout, reaching our limit and catching and releasing well plenty of fish until almost 2:30 PM.

We were using 1/2 oz. Copper Spoons to catch our Redfish and Bass Assassin Swim Shads to catch all of our Trout. The Bass Assassin we were using were Red/White, Drunk Monkey in the Blurp scented baits, Texas Roach, and Plum/Chartreuse. The darker colors seemed to yield the bigger fish. We were targeting the grass beds of the Meadows that had bait activity. The Meadows is a great place to fish, especially if the wind is blowing and you have some green water as we did that day. Be sure to stick with the small fish in there. Most of the time, the big fish are in there with them, you just have to sort of weed through them to get to the bigger fish. I also recommend going to a 1/4 oz or sometimes even a 3/8 oz. jig head to get that lure down to the bottom quicker and keeping it there. That's where the bigger fish are at when the heat is on.
